Role of the Social Worker

The social workers at Schreiber High School are licensed mental health professionals who play a significant role in linking the school, families, and the Port Washington community. 

As members of the general and special education teams, social workers assist students and their families with mental health concerns, positive behavioral assistance, and consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators to promote student advocacy and support their academic success.

 

They often provide specialized services that include:

 

 Student Services: 

 

  • Individual, group, and family counseling. 
  • Developing intervention strategies to increase academic success.
  • Identifying risky student behavior and socio-emotional needs.
  • Providing student assessment and brief treatment interventions.
  • Crisis prevention and interventions.
  • Improving students’ interpersonal relationships. 
  • Assisting students understand and accept themselves and others.
  • Teaching problem-solving skills that help students make decisions.
  • Providing conflict resolution and anger management interventions. 
  • Helping students develop appropriate social interaction skills.
  • Supporting students to continue their education and graduate. 

 

Family Services: 

  • Working with parents to facilitate support in their child's adjustment to high school.
  • Alleviating family stress to enable students to function more effectively in school & community.
  • Assisting parents to access programs available to students with special needs.
  • Assisting parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources. 
  • Facilitating the mental health referral process.

 

Interdisciplinary School Services: 

  • Participating in special education assessment meetings as well as individual educational planning meetings
  • Preparing a social or developmental history on a child with a disability.
  • Collaborating with STEPS and FLC Team professionals
  • Collaborating with community agencies and organizations.
