Business Education

The Business Education department provides all students at Paul D. Schreiber High School with various opportunities to succeed. The electives offered are designed to incorporate modern technology, real-world experiences and even an element of fun! Business education courses allow students to explore different career paths while motivating and challenging students to work as business professionals. Students can earn national certifications, honors credits and up to twelve college credits through LIU Post. Read through our course descriptions and choose which business class is right for you.

ACCOUNTING COURSES

ACCOUNTING

Term: Full Year
 
Grades: 10-12
 
    Are you interested in business courses, but need an introductory course to start? Accounting is the beginning course for you. This introductory accounting course focuses on basic concepts and the accounting cycle. It is strongly recommended for students pursuing any business major in college. This course gives students an excellent foundation in accounting and will prepare them for future business courses. Although this course is not a prerequisite for College Accounting, it is helpful, and it is recommended to take Accounting before College Accounting.
 
Note:  This course is available to meet the third credit of the required three unit math sequence.  See your counselor for details.

COLLEGE ACCOUNTING - HONORS

Term: Full Year
 
Grades: 11-12
 
Prerequisite: Completion of accounting course or Departmental Approval 
College Accounting is an accelerated course providing a deeper look into the field of accounting and fundamental financial principles. The course concentrates on identifying, recording and communicating the economic and business events of a corporation and creating a full set of financial statements according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. It is intended for everyone and is strongly recommended for students planning a career in business. This is an honors level course. Students may earn three credits at LIU Post upon payment of tuition and successful completion of the course.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INVESTING

PRINCIPLES OF CORPORATE FINANCE HONORS

Term: Full Year
 
Grades: 11-12
 
Prerequisite: Completion of one Accounting or Wall Street course or Department Approval
 
   How do you maximize the value of an investment while balancing risk and profitability? Company managers face decisions every day about how to prioritize and use financial resources to enhance shareholder return. This course will address fundamental concepts behind capital budgeting and financial decision making. Key topics will include time, value of money, discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis, net present value, bond and stock valuation, cost of capital and risk-return tradeoff. These concepts will be applied to a variety of real-world situations including corporate decision-making and valuation of securities. Students may earn up to three college credits at LIU Post upon payment of tuition and successful completion of course.

VIRTUAL ENTERPRISE

Term: Full Year
 
Grades: 10-12
 
Prerequisite:  Completion of one business course recommended.
 
Are you interested in starting your own business and becoming an entrepreneur?  In Virtual Enterprise (VE), students are transformed into employees of a company working in a department of their choice (management, accounting, finance, human resources, marketing, or sales). As “employees” of the virtual business, students will be responsible and accountable for the company’s performance and success. The Virtual Enterprise firm will engage in real world business activities with a global network of student run businesses in over 40 countries communicating by phone, email and social media.
 
The Virtual Enterprise classroom is equipped with modern technology (Chromebooks, iPad, iMac, Apple TV), leather chairs and a conference table in order to mimic a workplace environment. VE students will participate in various competitions and tradeshows, showcasing their professionalism, teamwork, presentation skills, business knowledge and ideas. If that’s not exciting enough, students may earn up to six college credits at LIU Post upon payment of tuition and successful completion of the course.

WALL STREET/PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT

Term: Semester- September & February
 
Grades: 10- 12
 
Do you want to be a millionaire? In this business course students will learn the ins and outs of Wall Street and portfolio management. Students will explore various investment classes including stocks, bonds, mutual funds and ETFs with a focus on the U.S. stocks market. Various stock market games will be incorporated into the curriculum as well as portfolio management projects. Learn how to conduct financial analysis and to pitch buy, sell and hold recommendations like an investment professional. Staying current with the Wall St. Journal, Yahoo Finance and current stock market prices are key to being successful in this class.

LAW COURSES

BUSINESS LAW HONORS

If you are considering a college major in business or have an interest in law, this is the elective to choose. Business Law is the type of law that most lawyers practice and that you will deal with on a daily basis , both personally and professionally. Topics include torts, contracts, sales, employment, labor laws, insurance, partnerships, corporations and property. Business Law is a required course for business majors in college and this class will give you the head start that you will need to succeed in the college course. Students may earn three credits at LIU Post upon payment of tuition and successful completion of the course.

MARKETING

PRINCIPLES OF MARKETING

Term:  Semester - September & February

Principles of Marketing is a project-based course designed for students interested in a business major in college, or any person who may become involved in marketing a product or service in any future endeavor (artists, scientists, writers and more). Students will explore the latest marketing concepts in the new global economy as well as domestic marketing concepts, strategies and techniques. Students will participate in many marketing projects covering demographics, advertising, branding, new product development, market research, visual merchandising, product placement and social media marketing. Most colleges require their business majors to take at least one semester of Marketing.

SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING

Term:  Semester - September & February
 
Grades: 11-12
 
This project-based course will present an overview of the application of marketing principles in the sports and entertainment industries. Using a variety of classroom activities, students will participate in step-by-step methods of creating a marketing mix, pricing, designing appropriate advertising, creating new products, and the professional selling of sport and entertainment products and services. The Virtual Business software and case-study analysis will enhance the content of this valuable course.

COMPUTER COURSES

MICROSOFT CERTIFICATION FOR WORD

Term:  Semester - September & February
 
Grades: 9-12
 
You say you know Microsoft Word? Now you can prove it! Throughout this course, you will learn Microsoft fundamentals that will prepare you to obtain a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. A MOS certification is nationally recognized and demonstrates that you are proficient in the use of a particular application. A Microsoft Word certification is proof that you are skilled in that particular software. Impress colleges and employees with a nationally recognized certification on your resume. Fees charged for the MOS certification are the responsibility of the student.
 
Note: The MOS test is optional; students can enroll in the course to learn the application without taking the exam. The New York State Education Department has added the Microsoft Certiport exams to the 4+1/Multiple Pathways list of approved CTE assessments.

ADVANCED MICROSOFT CERTIFICATION FOR EXCEL/POWERPOINT

Term:  Semester - September & February
 
Grades: 9-12
 
This course is a continuation of Microsoft Certification for Word.  Now you can prove your skills in Microsoft PowerPoint and/or Microsoft Excel by obtaining additional MOS certifications.  Students will take the Microsoft computerized test right here at Schreiber for a fee.  Fees charged for MOS certification are the responsibility of the student. 
 
Note: The MOS test is optional; students can enroll in the course to learn the applications without taking the exam.

COMPUTER SKILLS FOR COLLEGE AND CAREERS 1

Term: Semester 
 
Grades: 9-12
 
   It’s no secret that teachers, college professors and business professionals prefer (sometimes require) typewritten documents. This course will teach you the essential skills needed to become a typing master. Using the Google and Microsoft Office Suites, you will learn how to create critical business documents such as resumes, cover letters, business letters, and all components of a proper research paper (footnotes, table of contents, bibliography, cover page etc.). Give yourself an advantage by acquiring the necessary computer skills to succeed in high school, college, careers and beyond.

COMPUTER SKILLS FOR COLLEGE AND CAREERS 2

Term: Semester

   This course is an extension of Computer Skills for College and Careers 1. Advanced computer skills will be mastered enhancing your marketability in any college or job market.

SENIOR EXPERIENCE

BUSINESS INTERNSHIP SENIOR EXPERIENCE

Term: Full Year
 
Grade: 12
 
Prerequisite:  Completion of one Business elective course
 
Enroll in the full year course entitled Business Internship Senior Experience. Are you interested in pursuing a career in business? Then this course is for you! First semester will include topics covered in Career and Financial Management, such as resume writing, interview skills and career exploration. During this time, students will also have to research and find an internship, community service, or independent project related to a business content area that suits their interests. This can include finance, accounting, marketing, business law or management. Students will receive release time from class during the second semester to complete their assignment. The assessment for this requirement will be included in the course grade. This course will meet for two days out of the six-day cycle.
