Family and Consumer Sciences

Skills learned in the Family and Consumer Sciences Department are readily applicable to all students’ lives.  Food preparation, nutrition, entertaining, consumerism, parenting, sewing, personal finance management, job exploration and acquisition skills — the FACS department offers a wide variety of courses that will improve students’ quality of life and prepare them to be successful, independent citizens in our diverse global community.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT CORE

Term:  Full Year
 
Grades: 10-12
 
Are you considering a career that involves children or think that you want to be a parent someday? In this class students will explore the social, intellectual, moral, physical, language and emotional development of infants and children. They will also acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to provide care in a positive nurturing environment.  This course also includes an internship at the Port Washington Pre-K and/or Daly Elementary School. Creating safe and age-appropriate lessons and activities to stimulate children’s learning and exploring complex issues such as child abuse/neglect, divorce, teen parenting, children’s health issues, and the changing family are explored throughout the class.

CREATIVE CUISINE

Term: Semester (Alternating Years)

Do you enjoy cooking, baking and presenting food in a fun and attractive way? In this class students will prepare a wide variety of dishes while learning and practicing the principles of food styling, plating and garnishing, current culinary/social media food trends, and entertainment. Students will be required to practice sound kitchen safety, sanitation, and personal hygiene procedures.

CULTURE AND FOODS

Term: Semester (Alternating Years)

Would you like to take a culinary “world tour” through places such as Europe, Asia, and Latin America with other “stops” along the way? In this course students will prepare, taste, and evaluate a variety of appetizers, main courses, and desserts from many locations around the world, while also exploring the cultural influences unique to each region. Students will be required to practice sound kitchen safety, sanitation, and personal hygiene procedures.

BAKE SHOP

Term: Semester (Alternating Years)

Are you a fan of “Cupcake Wars?” Would you like to learn to bake your own desserts and decorate them? This course offers an introduction to the science and art of baking. Students will explore and experience the basic principles of baking, recipe formulations, functions of ingredients, and kitchen procedures. Students will prepare a variety of breads, cakes, cookies, pies, custards, and candies. They will practice cake decorating techniques using fondant and buttercream. Recipe modifications for allergies, dietary restrictions, and nutritional benefits will also be explored.

Do you enjoy eating and want to learn how to cook tasty foods with a healthy spin? In this class students will prepare, taste, and evaluate a variety of popular breakfast, lunch, snack, and holiday food options, with a focus on practical nutrition, entertaining guests, and budget-friendly food shopping. Students will also try recipes from various food groups, evaluate their nutrients, account for common allergens and dietary restrictions, and practice innovative ways to implement what they learn into new recipes. Students will be required to practice sound kitchen safety, sanitation, and personal hygiene procedures.

*CLOTHING AND TEXTILE CORE

Are you interested in fashion design? Do you want to learn to alter or repair your own clothes?  Would you like to make your own gym bag or stuffed animal? This hands-on course explores fashion, design and basic sewing.  Topics covered include: fashion fundamentals, elements and principles of design, fashion history, consumerism, and fashion-related careers, with an emphasis on personal application. Basic hand and machine sewing techniques are introduced. Then students select fabrics and sew projects of their choosing. Related college and career opportunities are also explored.

*HOUSING AND ENVIRONMENT CORE

Term: Semester - Spring only
 
Grades: 9-12
 
Do you plan to move out on your own someday? Are you interested in interior design?  Topics covered in this course include: searching for budget friendly apartments, considering roommates, basic personal finance, and elements and principles of interior design. Students will evaluate actual budget-friendly apartments and the costs associated with moving out on their own and will later apply their knowledge gained in the interior design unit to create their own model tiny homes. Related college and career opportunities are also explored.

FACS SENIOR EXPERIENCE

Term:  Full Year
 
Are you planning to graduate high school next year? Will you need to prepare meals, get a job, and manage your finances in the near future? Would you like to complete a Senior Experience Project in Education/Child Care, Nutrition/Food Preparation, Fashion/ Garment Construction, Interior Design, Entrepreneurship, or another related content area?  In this course the fall semester will cover many aspects of the FACS curriculum as they relate to students’ transition to moving out on their own. Lessons and activities will be differentiated based on prior coursework. The spring semester supports individualized Senior Experiences as students complete an internship or project in one of our content areas or other topics of interest.
