Welcome Letter 🏫

August 2025

Dear Sophomore:

As the new school year approaches, I want to welcome you back to Schreiber for your sophomore year! I'm excited to continue supporting you as your assistant principal and hope you had a great summer, ready to take on another exciting year ahead.

As a sophomore, you’re no longer new to Schreiber—you’ve already taken important steps in adjusting to high school life. This year is a great opportunity to build on what you’ve learned, deepen your connections with teachers and peers, and start thinking more intentionally about your goals. Continue to stay on top of your studies, but also challenge yourself to try something new—whether it’s joining a club, playing a sport, or taking on a leadership role. Sophomore year is a time for growth, exploration, and building confidence. I look forward to celebrating your achievements throughout the year. Please feel free to see me in the main office anytime if you have questions, concerns, or just want to talk. I'm here to support you!

On the first day of school, Wednesday, September 3rd, please report to the room listed below at 8:05AM based on your last name for a special organizational period to kick off the new school year. All students must be present for the organizational period on the first day, including students with first period free. Please bring your schedule, a pen/pencil, notebook, and your charged district issued Chromebook. The first day of school will be a Day A and all classes will meet, so come prepared. You will receive a copy of the day’s schedule for Day A and you will also be given a new ID card and lanyard, which you are expected to wear throughout each school day. It is very important that you report to your designated room on time.

ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING: All students must enter the building through the main entrance. ID cards need to be presented when entering the building at all times.

ID CARDS: You will be issued an ID card and lanyard during the first day of school. Students must wear their ID cards at all times when in the building or on school property. Failure to wear your ID card will result in disciplinary action. If a student forgets their ID card at home, they are required to get a temporary one issued when they enter the building. Consistently forgetting your ID card at home will result in disciplinary action. If you lose your ID card, the cost for a replacement is $5.00.

INTERNET ENABLED DEVICES: In accordance with New York State “Distraction Free Schools” law and district policy, all students are prohibited from using internet enabled personal devices during the school day, 8:05am-3:05pm. All sophomore students must have these devices silenced and stored in their assigned locker. Students seen in possession of an internet enabled personal device, will face disciplinary action. Students must use the district issued Chromebooks to access google classroom and instructional materials during the school day.

ATTENDANCE: School begins at 8:05 a.m. each day, and classes end at 3:05 p.m. Attendance is taken during every period. In order to be in your first period class on time, you should arrive at school no later than 8:00 a.m. Keep in mind that Campus Drive traffic can be heavy, so leave enough time to arrive at your class on time.

  • Absence for the Day: If you are absent or late for the day, your parent(s) must call the Class of 2028 attendance office, 516-767-5844, on the morning of the occurrence to notify us of your absence. All medical absences must be accompanied by a note from the doctor’s office.
  • Lateness to School: If you arrive after 8:15 a.m. you must sign in at my office prior to going to first period class. Repeated lateness to class will result in disciplinary action. If you arrive any time after first period ends, you must immediately report to my office to sign-in. Your parent(s) should have already called the attendance office, 516-767-5844, to indicate the reason for your lateness. Remember, oversleeping is not an excused absence and will be marked as a class cut.
  • Signing Out/ Leaving Early: We understand that you might need to leave school early. Students that do not feel well during the day must sign out through the medical office. If you need to leave school early due to a scheduled appointment, your parent(s) must call in advance. You must always sign out either in my office or the medical office before leaving school. Please limit the number of appointments that you make during school. A parent must call in advance and a doctor’s note must be handed in when you return. If you do not provide a note from the doctor, the absence will be recorded as unexcused.
  • Cutting Class: Students are expected to attend every scheduled class. Class cuts are not acceptable. Parents will be notified when students cut class. In addition, the student will be given after-school detention, which will take precedence over sports, clubs, or other commitments. Failure to attend detention will result in suspension.  Repeated class cutting can result in failure of that class for the quarter.

Parents and students should be aware that any missed class time—including full-day excused absences, late arrivals, or early dismissals—can impact a student’s academic progress in those classes. These absences also count toward the 85% attendance requirement and may affect a student’s standing if the limit is exceeded.  (See Student Handbook)

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY: Your academic performance is directly connected with your ability to participate in our athletic and extracurricular activities. At the end of each marking period, any students who failed two or more subjects will be ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities and/or athletics for the duration of the next marking period. Your fourth quarter grades will determine your eligibility for the Fall sports season.

LOCKERS AND LOCKS: Sophomores are automatically issued a locker. You may not change lockers without permission. Once a locker has been assigned to you, you may not change it without permission from my office. Remember, the person assigned to the locker is legally responsible for its contents. Do not share your combination with anyone. If you forget your locker combination, come and see Mrs. Pond. If you lose or damage the lock, it will cost $5.00 to replace.

STUDENT LUNCH: Every student has a lunch period every day. If there are no seats available in the cafeteria, additional seating is available during lunch periods at the picnic tables in front of the school building and in the Student Commons. Eating and gathering in the halls is not allowed. Remember that sophomores are not permitted off campus during school hours. Violation of this rule will result in disciplinary action.

STUDENT HANDBOOK: The Student Handbook contains information that you need to know, including many of the school rules and the student code of character, culture, and conduct. You can access the Student Handbook via the link: Student Handbook or by navigating the Schreiber website. Please read the handbook carefully and review it frequently for reference. You are responsible for following all school rules. These rules and regulations are designed to ensure that everyone has access to an education in a safe and healthy environment.

UNSTRUCTURED TIME: I strongly urge you to spend your unstructured time in the library or resource centers. You may also spend this time in the cafeteria, the Student Commons, or in the circle only. Please remember that all other areas on campus are considered off-limits, including the woods, athletic fields, the stands or behind the school.

As I prepare to go on maternity leave in September, I want to share that Mr. David Miller will be stepping in as the Sophomore assistant principal starting in September. Some of you may already know Mr. Miller, as he previously served as an assistant principal here at Schreiber High School. His familiarity with our school community and his experience in this role will ensure a smooth and seamless transition. I have every confidence that you’ll be in great hands during my time away. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mr. Miller with any questions or concerns—he is here to support you just as I would.

I look forward to seeing all the wonderful things you’ll accomplish this year and can’t wait to be back with you soon to celebrate your progress firsthand.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lomangino
