Hayley Rose Fuchs Memorial Award

Description: Hayley Rose Fuchs, by many accounts was not your “average” person. Hayley was a talented artist, a talented athlete, and was talented academically. She had a fierce sense of advocacy, a full heart that cared deeply about others, and always, she stood out from the crowd. We give this award not just to remember Hayley, but also to remember and honor the faculty and community of Port Washington for their unwavering support of our family after her death. Special people at Schreiber like Karen Hazan of the Guidance Department helped each of our three children during their 12 collective years at Schreiber.

Tragically our beautiful, creative, intelligent, daughter died by suicide in 2011 at 20 years old. Her death affected her family, and her friends, yet how Hayley lived continues to infuse her friends and family with inspiration. This was most apparent to us when Hayley’s dear friend Natalie wrote an ode about her, eight years after her death. Natalie looks back at their friendship and Hayley’s authenticity and non-conforming ways, and lovingly calls her “weirdo”. In contrast, Natalie looks back at her younger self as “idolizing conformity at the expense of my weird”, and observes that “resisting my weird, my soul began to wither”. Natalie’s memories of how Hayley lived her life, became part of her own soul-soaring journey.

Award: One $1000 scholarship

Essay

Essay Prompt: This may speak about a time when the writer was able to find greater self-compassion because they went beyond the status quo, or chose to non-conform in a positive way, and how they found themselves stronger for it. The essay can be about a time when the "weird" in someone else inspired the student to be true to his or herself. The student might share their own story of embracing their "weird" to allow their soul to soar, instead of wither.

While this award is really about the wonderful talents and strengths of its senior student recipient, we also would like to use the opportunity to bring awareness to suicide prevention. One step that you can take to help stop suicide right now, is to take out your phone and enter the following numbers for the National Suicide and Crisis Hotline into your contacts: 988. Share it with anyone who may need it, or to use it yourself if you are ever in crisis.

Lori Mackson Schiffer Memorial Scholarship

Description: Lori Mackson Schiffer graduated Schreiber High School in 1995, and went on to live an exceedingly meaningful, although much too short, life.  She attended Brown University and Harvard Law School and was an accomplished intellectual property attorney at the law firm of Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP in NYC.  Lori was brilliant - but never in an ostentatious way, or a way that made anyone feel inferior.  If you spoke with her for more than a few minutes, you realized she was a force.
More importantly, Lori was thoughtful.  She was dedicated to her friends and her family.  Partly due to her wisdom, but mostly due to her compassion, she became "the person" for so many to turn to in their times of need.  This never changed for Lori throughout her life, as even in her darkest times, she gained the most pleasure from helping others - whether it be a work, relationship or child-rearing issue.

Lori, and her husband Michael, returned to Port Washington in 2010 to raise their two children, Jonah and Nathan, in the town that she grew up in.  Her sincerest hope was that her children would learn the importance of community, scholarship and giving here; and they are well on their way because of example she has set for them.  Lori passed away in 2013, at the age of 36.

Lori's unique combination of intellect and compassion are what make this scholarship the perfect reflection of her memory. This award is given to a high school senior who has demonstrated a passion for helping others through community service, combined with a dedication to succeed academically.

Description: Noah Benjamin Reisman grew up in Port Washington and graduated from Paul D. Schreiber in 2012. While at Schreiber, Noah led other likeminded students as captain of the debate team, finishing second in the New York State Debate Championship. Noah was also a member of the social science research program. He was the only student to ever serve as a representative on the Port Washington Board of Education. Noah graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in Government. With a passion for justice, Noah enrolled in The George Washington University Law School, where he made GW Law Review and formed a lasting positive impression on the students and faculty.

Upon finishing his first year at the top of his class, Noah decided to move back home to New York and transfer to Columbia Law School. During his second year of law school, Noah was selected as a member of the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law. Noah spoke out against injustice. He embraced and devoured knowledge, exploration, and culture, always expanding his horizons and those of the people around him. Challenging others to broaden their own thinking, he never backed down from a spirited debate and used his intellect, eloquence, and empathy for others to defend what was right. He had an unparalleled ability to add wit and wisdom to every conversation.

Noah was passionate about all types of music, fine food, and great conversation. He lived life with spontaneity and joy, always willing to drop what he was doing to support a friend or family member that needed him. Noah knew life was a precious gift, and his greatest pleasure was sharing life's best offerings with the ones he loved. We are confident that the student who receives The Noah Benjamin Reisman scholarship will embrace the same ideals that Noah deeply valued, including racial justice, educational equity, and helping those in need. Let us all live in the way Noah knew life was meant to be experienced – to the absolute fullest every day, always helping others and always being kind.

Philip J. Bernstein Memorial Technology Scholarship for Women & Minorities

Description: Philip Bernstein was a 2013 graduate of Schreiber High School. By that point, he was already well on his way to a phenomenally successful career as a software application developer, having taught himself to program when he was fifteen. While still in high school, he earned scholarships to attend the Apple World-Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco and authored a number of successful smartphone applications, which had garnered millions of downloads.

After high school, he took a less traditional path, foregoing a college degree. At 19, he convinced the CEO of a startup to give an inexperienced kid his first full-time programming job. And from there, he became a superstar programmer, constantly in demand, constantly recruited for the next, bigger job. In 2018, at the age of 23, he became the lead developer for HiThrive, a NYC startup, managing several other developers, launching successful iOS and Android versions of the company’s application. And the company had just received several million dollars of outside funding when Philip passed away on July 24, 2019.

Throughout his career, Philip lamented the lack of women and minorities in the computer- programming world. He attended many industry conferences and often noted that they were dominated by people who looked just like him – white males. He wanted to change that. The Philip J. Bernstein Memorial Technology Scholarship for Women & Minorities honors that desire.

The scholarship is for someone who is a woman OR a minority (or both) and is intended to foster interest in technology in general, and software application development in particular. To apply, the applicant does NOT need to be someone who will be attending college, if the applicant will be working in the field of software application development.

Award: $1500 scholarship (may be divided amongst more than one student)

Requirements:
Schreiber Application
Resume- A list of prior and current experiences in fields of technology or software application development (such as courses taken, clubs, conferences attended, software applications written or published, jobs, internships, etc.)
Indicate exactly what the scholarship will be used for (for example: new computer or other device, travel expenses to or cost of attending a conference, software or technology development tools)
Essay

Essay Prompt:  Please describe your interest in technology or software application development and how this scholarship will help you pursue that interest.

Richard L. Boyle Memorial Scholarship Award

Description: Richard “Dick” Boyle was a remarkable educator whose love of mathematics and legendary creativity enabled him to reach and teach students of all ages and abilities. Throughout his thirty-four years of service, Mr. Boyle’s complete dedication to our town’s students was inspirational. As one of them wrote:  He made math "magic" for me. There are only a few teachers you remember - he's at the top!

In the classroom, our soft-spoken teacher held us spellbound in Geometry by invoking the fearsome image of Native American “Chief Sohcahtoa,” to motivate us when computing sines, cosines, and tangents. In Algebra, he used little “Cousin It” dolls to make various algebraic points - and by the end of that semester, there were tons of these hairy dolls resting on top of the blackboards and cabinets, and even hanging from the light fixtures!

Mr. Boyle encouraged us to hone our math abilities by pitting row against row in his famous “Row Quizzes,” and by asking us to compute the batting averages of the 1969 World Series NY Mets so that we could improve on our decimal vs. fraction skills. Just like the members of that legendary baseball team, Mr. Boyle was a true champion, one who made a big difference in the lives of countless Sousa and Schreiber students over the years to come.

Furthermore, Mr. Boyle’s many accomplishments transcended the classroom. He was a President of the Kiwanis Club and a Chairman of the museum in the upstate NY town to which he retired, as well as an outstanding photographer, an avid athlete, and a talented trumpeter. One of the most unassuming individuals any of us had ever met, Richard Boyle was a true Renaissance man, one who not only taught us about math but also about how to live our lives.

Richard Boyle’s untimely passing in 2008 motivated many of his former students and colleagues to establish this scholarship award in his memory. It is bestowed each year upon a graduating Schreiber High School senior who has consistently displayed excellence in mathematics and the creative arts, and who has selflessly given to others, preferably through tutoring, mentoring, or some similar volunteer service. Consideration will be given to students who have also engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities or have otherwise exemplified the generous spirit and remarkable legacy of Mr. Boyle.

He became an “educational advocate” especially with his son. Joe loved working with numbers and was a whiz at mathematics. While in high school, he was employed after school and on weekends at Bayles Garden Center nursery. Because he loved to work with his hands, he quickly became involved with repairing engines and equipment and was a mainstay in their Service Department.
