Who: This is an entry-level art course for 9th grade students. However, the course is open to students of all grade levels interested in making art. Students who are taking the Foundations Studio Art course in 8th grade at Weber are not required to take the Foundations in Studio Art course at Schreiber. These students may advance to Drawing and Painting I and II in 9th grade. 8th grade Weber students taking the accelerated art course are required to take Foundation Studio Art in 9th grade. The half credit they earn in the accelerated course will count toward an elective class at Schreiber.

What: This course provides an excellent overview of how to create all types of art including abstraction, surrealism, portraits, landscapes, collage, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and ceramics.

When: Full year course.

Where: Art studio. Occasionally classes are held outdoors when studying landscapes.

Why: This course introduces students to many different techniques, media, and ideas in art. Students have the unique opportunity to engage the creative right-side of their brains to express their thoughts and feelings in a studio environment. Students gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical aspects of art and its creation. This course fulfills the 1 unit graduation requirement for art or music and prepares students for advanced electives.
