Port Washington ENL Students Excel at PR-HYLI Program in Albany

The Port Washington School District’s ENL Department takes great pride in fostering student growth and empowerment through dynamic programs designed to enhance leadership skills and self-assurance. This year, the District proudly continued our tradition of offering the esteemed Puerto Rican- Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute Program (PR-HYLI), a transformative journey culminating in an exhilarating activity and presentation in Albany, New York.

Out of the seventy-one students who participated from New York State, a select group of forty-five were chosen to attend this prestigious event. Four of the students selected to attend were from Paul D. Schreiber High School: Estefani Montenegro De Paz, Francisco Mejia Henríquez, Paola González Hernández, and Ariana Zari Ramon. Throughout the program, the students not only actively engaged in debates but also passionately advocated for important legislative bills on the Assembly Floor at the New York Capitol Building, from March 9th to March 11th. We are thrilled to announce that Ariana’s incredible work during the event earned was recognized with a $1,400 scholarship from the organizers.  Guiding and supporting these students every step of the way was their dedicated ENL teacher, Mr. Brendan Klein, who worked throughout the year to ensure their success and selection for this prestigious opportunity. When asked about our district’s participation in this event, Priscilla Zarate Director of ENL Pre-K-12, stated “Together, they exemplified the spirit of excellence and resilience, showcasing the boundless potential of our student community.”
