Role of the Psychologist
The psychologists at Schreiber High School are licensed mental health professionals who are trained at the doctoral level and have completed rigorous academic curriculum and internships with extensive practice experience.
School psychologists are recognized by state law to provide independent diagnostic decisions and recommendations that support our students’ learning, behavioral, and emotional concerns. They are intensely involved in assuring that all special needs students obtain appropriately identified services that are provided as mandated by state law.
They often provide specialized services that include:
Students Services:
- Providing psycho-educational evaluations to students.
- Providing individual and group counseling to students with special needs.
- Skilled in administering a range of tests designed to assess:
- Cognitive ability
- Academic skills
- Social and emotional functioning
- Learning disabilities
- Planning appropriate Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities
- Providing IEP students with progress monitoring
- Providing academic, learning, and behavioral intervention plans to reduce inappropriate referrals to special education
- Reinforcing positive coping skills and resilience
- Providing curriculum and class accommodations
Family Services:
- Assisting parents in navigating the process of requesting special education
- Assisting students’ families to plan appropriate individualized education programs for students with disabilities
- Facilitating the Committee on Special Education (CSE) services and procedures
- Monitoring and effectively communicating with parents about IEP student progress
Interdisciplinary School Services
- Making referrals to help coordinate community services provided in schools
- Collaborating with different school professionals during instructional support meetings
- Collaborating with outside professionals and agencies
