Introducing our Hall of Fame Inductees
THOMAS ‘TOMMY’ HENDERSON – CLASS OF 1968
• 1 year Varsity Soccer
• 2 years Varsity Basketball
• 3 years Varsity Baseball
• All-County during a time where awards players played for the love of the game, not for recognition. Very few awards were handed out.
• Outstanding rebounder – Coach was Al Jessen
• Led the Basketball team to North Shore Championships
• Runner up as Nassau County Champions in Baseball Coach – Stan Cutler
• Pitcher, Catcher, outfielder – AMAZING HITTER – earning his nicknames ‘Clutch’ and ‘Money’
• Member of the Port Washington Fire Department 15 years, played on Softball team for all of those years, led team to 6 State Championships.
• Played on numerous Manorhaven Mens’ Softball leagues, leading teams to 7 championships
• Tommy passed away on November, 17, 2022 – leaving his wife Mary, son Michael and daughters Dawn and Renae – Tommy is being recognized by friends and family.
CRAIG RUBIN – CLASS OF 2001
Not often does the Hall of Fame committee recognize a single sport athlete – according to the guidelines, one must be outstanding.
• 6 YEARS Varsity Tennis player
• Played #1 Singles and was Team Captain for 4 years
• Helped the team with Conference Titles for 3 years which included winning the deciding singles match over Jericho as an 8th grader to get Schreiber promoted from Conference II back to Conference I
• Nassau County Singles Champion
• Nassau County Doubles semi-finalist
• NYS Doubles Quarterfinalist
• Ranked 94th best junior tennis player in the country his senior year.
• Went on to play at UPENN/Wharton School where he played 4 years of Varsity, played singles and doubles all 4 years, 2x co-Captain, won team’s most Inspirational Award
ALEXA FROCCARO WYNN – CLASS OF 2011
• 4 years Varsity Tennis
• 2x All-Division
• 2x Long Island Champions – playing 2nd Doubles
• Most Improved Player
• 2x All-County
• Team Captain
• MVP
• 4 years Varsity Lacrosse
• 1x Honorable Mention All-County
• 3x All-County
• 2x Named MVP
• Conference III Champions
• 2x team Captain
• 2x named to Newsday All-Long Island team
• Selected to the National Schoolgirl Team
• Named Schreiber’s Outstanding Female Athlete
• Went on to Adelphi – where she was a starter, named to the NE-10 All Rookie team, Second team All-Conference, Named Most Outstanding Player of the Division II Final Four, 2x NCAA Division II National Champions, Second team and first team IWLCA All-American, ECAC First Team All-Star, still holds records at Adelphi – 5th in All-time Career Goals, 8th in Career points, and 10th for Assists
JACKIE FROCCARO – CLASS OF 2011
• 3 years Varsity Tennis (one year injured)
• 2x Long Island 2nd doubles Champions
• 4x NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete
• Varsity Captain
• Team MVP
• All-County
• 2x All-Conference
• 2x All-Division
• Team Most Improved Player
• 4 years Varsity Lacrosse
• USILA Academic All-American
• 2x Team Captain

• 2x All-Conference
• NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete
• Conference III Champions
• MVP
• Won the Joseph Augustino Award for Most Outstanding Female Athlete
• Went on to play at Villanova where she was a 4 year starter – 2x team captain, first team All-Big East Selection, Best East Attacker of the year, Big-East All-Tournament team, led Big-East in draw controls, 2x Second team All-Big East Selection, All-Region, selected to the North/South Senior all-star team, still holds all-time records at Villanova, 3rd in Goals, 4th in points, 1st in Free Position Goals, and 4th in Draw controls.
RICK ZAPPALA – 20 YEARS OF SERVICE TO PORT WASHINGTON ATHLETICS
• Athletic Trainer for Schreiber for 20 years – Retired in June 2023
• Graduate of Boston College, with a BA in Secondary Education and History, and graduate work at Central Connecticut State University with a Masters in Physical Education, as a graduate assistant athletic trainer.
• Worked as an athletic Trainer with the United State Olympic Committee for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain specifically attending to the boxing team, including Gold Winner Oscar De La Hoya
• Worked with outstanding athletes who later went to the NFL – Charlie Adams – played for the Denver Broncos and Waye Chrebet, Lance Shulters and Dave Fiore of the 49’s while they were at Hofstra
• Head Athletic Trainer for the US Team at the World Games for the Deaf in 1985 – in Los Angeles
• Volunteer trainer for the Empire State Games
• Among many presenters at professional meetings he also is the proud recipient of several honors including: NYS Parent Teacher Association’s Jenkins Memorial Award, NYSATA Thomas Sheenan, Sr. Award, inducted into the NYSATA Hall of Fame in 2005, received the EATA Josephy Blanksowitsch Award, and EATA Cramer Award and was recognized in 2005 by the NATA as a Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer.
The Port Washington Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. in the Schreiber High School Auditorium. We hope to see you there!
