College Application Process

This list explains the responsibilities of everyone involved in the college application process. While counselors and parents are there to support you, know that students play the major role in the college process. The college you ultimately select is the one where you will feel most successful.
  • Advise students and parents regarding college possibilities.
  • Write students’ recommendations.
  • Send transcripts, recommendations, and mid-year reports (if requested) to all colleges.
  • Provide support for students and parents.

  • Create your list of “best fit” colleges based on location, majors, activities, cost, etc.
  • Research colleges in Naviance and come up with a list of approximately 5-7 schools, composed of reach, target, and likely options (your counselor can assist you with this).
  • Research further information regarding colleges on their websites.
  • In junior year, submit all junior processing forms to your counselor via their Google Classroom.
  • Review the final list of colleges with your counselor.
  • Attend college Rep Visits to Schreiber.    
  • Know your social security number.
  • Visit colleges and make appointments for interviews and campus tours. 
  • Develop a strong essay and activities resume to send with your applications. 
  • Submit the Application Processing Forms to the Guidance Office by the designated deadline.
  • Use the Common Application www.commonapp.org to apply to your colleges. 
  • Match your Common App to your Naviance Student account.
  • Ask teachers for letters of recommendation, first in person and then in Naviance Student.
  • Inform your counselor of your admissions decisions and update Naviance.
  • Register with the NCAA if you are a college athlete.  Information for registration, as well as eligibility, can be found at www.eligibilitycenter.org.
  • Send official ACT and/or SAT score reports to the school(s) in which you are applying, and to the NCAA Clearinghouse if applicable.   This can be done at www.collegeboard.org and/or www.act.org respectively.  *Check your colleges’ policies on sending test scores.  
  • Research scholarships. 
  • Be sure to apply for the Community Scholarship (application released January 2023).
  • Discuss college choices with parents and send the deposit to the school of your choice by May 1st. Send letters to other schools indicating that you have decided to attend another school. 
  • Assist your student in requesting official score reports from SAT/ACT.
