English as a New Language Program (ENL)

ENL is a New York State mandated program for students whose native language is other than English and who are considered English Language Learners (ELLs). The ENL program is designed to enable the students to continue to study within the various subject areas and to earn credits towards graduation while they acquire English skills. Placement within the ENL program is determined by individualized testing as prescribed by the New York State.

ENL-MATH COURSES FOR BEGINNING LEVEL STUDENTS

Placement is based on a math diagnostic test.
 

ENL/PRE-ALGEBRA

Term: Full Year
 
This course reviews fundamental math topics that are required for English Language Learners (ELLs) to continue success in Algebra. Topics include but are not limited to: word problems, solving multi-step algebraic equations and inequalities, factoring, graphing, probability, signed numbers and percent. This course is taught using sheltered instruction methodology and English as a New Language (ENL) best instructional practices.

ENL/ALGEBRA 1 PLUS **

Term: Full Year
 
Algebra Plus is the first course of the 3-year NYS mathematics curriculum. This course is taught using sheltered instruction methodology and ENL best instructional practices. Students will explore topics in algebra, relationships between quantities and reasoning with equations and their graphs, descriptive statistics, linear & exponential functions, polynomial & quadratic expressions, equations & functions, a synthesis of modeling with equations and functions. The class meets every day in the 6-day cycle. The Algebra 1 Regents examination, a graduation requirement, will be completed in June.
 
NOTE: In order to graduate with a New York State Regents Diploma, students must pass at least one Regents examination with a grade of 65 or higher.

ENL/GEOMETRY PLUS **

Term: Full Year

Prerequisite: Algebra 1 Plus or Algebra 1 and recommendation of the department.
 
This is the second year in the 3-year high school mathematics curriculum. This course is taught using SIOP methodology to allow English Language Learners (ELLs) to access the curriculum. This course will cover congruence, proof, and constructions, similarity, proof, and trigonometry, extending applications to three dimensions, connecting algebra & geometry through coordinate circles with and without coordinates. This will be done while maintaining, strengthening, and expanding algebraic and problem-solving skills. This class will meet every day in the six-day cycle. The Geometry Regents examination will be taken in June.

ENL LANGUAGE ARTS COURSES

ENL/ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS: BEGINNER AND LOW INTERMEDIATE, GRADES 9-10 AND 11-12

Term:  Full Year
 
English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades 9-10 and 11-12 are grouped according to their proficiency and grade level in English for ENL Language Arts courses. These courses develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with a strong emphasis on vocabulary, grammar, and composition writing. Assignment to these courses is based on each individual student’s score on the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) exam.

ENL/READING: BEGINNER, LOW INTERMEDIATE, GRADES 9–10 AND 11-12

In these courses English Language Learners (ELLs) work on developing their vocabulary, comprehension and writing skills through the use of controlled reading materials appropriate to their level of English proficiency. Assignment to these courses is based on each individual student’s score on the NYSESLAT exam and grade level.

ENL/READING: INTERMEDIATE, GRADES 9- 10 AND 11- 12

In this course English Language Learners (ELLs) work on developing their vocabulary, comprehension and writing skills through the use of controlled reading materials appropriate to their level of English proficiency. Assignment to these courses is based on each individual student’s score on the NYSESLAT exam and grade level.

ENL/WRITING: BEGINNER, LOW INTERMEDIATE, GRADES 9–10 AND 11-12

In these courses English Language Learners (ELLs) work on developing their understanding of vocabulary and writing skills through the use of writing prompts, grammar practice, critical thinking questions, and written responses to a variety of texts appropriate to their level of English proficiency. Assignment to these courses is based on each individual student’s score on the NYSESLAT exam and grade level.

ENL/WRITING: INTERMEDIATE, GRADES 9–10 AND 11-12

In these courses English Language Learners (ELLs) work on developing their understanding of vocabulary and writing skills through the use of writing prompts, grammar practice, critical thinking questions, and written responses to a variety of texts appropriate to their level of English proficiency. Assignment to these courses is based on each individual student’s score on the NYSESLAT exam and grade level.

ENL/ENGLISH REGENTS SUPPORT

Term:  Semester
 
This class will meet 2 out of 6 days. The class is designed for 11th and 12th grade English Language Learners (ELLs). It will supplement the students’ English classes and increase their skills and knowledge in preparation for the Comprehensive English Regents examination.

ENL-SOCIAL STUDIES COURSES

Several different courses are offered in social studies which parallel those given in the social studies department, but employ special techniques and materials designed to enable English Language Learners (ELLs) to acquire the essential concepts and facts necessary to earn credit toward graduation and pass the New York State exams.

ENL/GLOBAL HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY 1 **

Term: Full Year
 
Grade: 9
 
This course will enable English Language Learners (ELLs) to comprehend the concepts found in the first year of the Global History curriculum. This course will focus on developing student’s understanding of essential historical terms and vocabulary. This is a 4 x 6 course. 

ENL/GLOBAL HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY 2 **

Term:  Full Year
 
Grade: 10
 
This course is the second-year course for the Global History curriculum. English Language Learners (ELLs) will receive experience with and preparation for the Global History and Geography Regents examination. This course will continue to focus on developing student’s understanding of essential historical terms and vocabulary. The laboratory sessions will focus on the writing process and prepare students for both the CRQs and Enduring Issue essay required on the Regents exam.  Through the lab, students will be offered the opportunity to become familiar with the format of the Regents and will be provided test-taking skills needed in order to be successful on the Regents examination.
 
This course is a 4 x 6 and meets the AIS requirements for students who are identified as at risk as determined by their performance on the social studies assessments (level 1 or 2).

ENL/UNITED STATES HISTORY & GOVERNMENT **

Term:  Full Year
 
Grade: 11
 
This course is intended to prepare English Language Learners (ELLs) for the US History and Government Regents examination. The course will focus on developing students’ understanding of essential historical terms and vocabulary. The lab sessions will focus on the writing process and prepare students for both the thematic and DBQ essays required on the Regents examination. This lab will offer students the opportunity to become familiar with the format of the Regents and will provide test-taking skills they will need to utilize in order to be successful on the Regents exam.
 
This course is a 4 x 6 and meets the AIS requirements for students who are identified as at risk as determined by their performance on the social studies Regents assessments.

ENL/GOVERNMENT AND ECONOMICS: URBAN STUDIES 

Term:  Full Year
 
Grade: 12
 
This course is intended to help English Language Learners (ELLs) learn the structure and functions of government and society by studying local, state and governments. The course will focus on developing students’ understanding of essential terms and vocabulary. As part of this class, the students also receive preparation and guidance in their Senior Experience project which is a graduation requirement. 
 
This course is a 4 x 6 and helps students fulfill their Senior Experience Requirements.

ENL-SCIENCE COURSES

ENL/LIVING ENVIRONMENT **

Term:  Full Year
 
The purpose of the class is to make Biology interesting and comprehensible for English Language Learners (ELLs) who have a limited command of the English language. Students will learn the fundamentals necessary to do well in a Biology Regents class the following year. Hands-on demonstrations, simple labs and enrichment exercises will enhance their understanding of scientific literacy. This is a 4 x 6 course.

ENL/BIOLOGY **

Term: Full Year
 
Prerequisite:  Completion of one-year ENL Living Environment and/ or department recommendation.
 
This course is designed to prepare English Language Learners (ELLs) for the Living Environment Regents. ELLs will conduct laboratory and classroom assignments that reinforce the concepts of the Living Environment Regents curriculum. Completed lab work and acceptable lab reports are state requirements. Upon satisfactory completion of the laboratory assignments students will sit for the New York State Regents examination being administered in June. This course is a 6 x 6 and meets the AIS requirements for students who are identified as at risk.

ENL/ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Term: Full Year
 
Prerequisite: recommendation of the ENL Department.
 
In this course English Language Learners (ELLs) will study patterns and processes, such as geologic, energy, water, soil and conservation in the natural world and how human activity is modifying these processes. Students will develop the knowledge and skills for investigating and analyzing environmental issues. They will demonstrate their knowledge to others through research, essay writing, oral presentations and projects. Students will strengthen their use of technology to investigate environmental topics. This course is 4x6. ELLs will receive one physical science credit.

ENL/HEALTH ADVISORY

Term: Full Year
 
Grades:  9/10
 
The ENL Advisory course is dedicated to guiding students as they transition into American schools and seamlessly integrate into American culture and education. Moreover, the course is committed to providing essential social emotional support, offering students from diverse backgrounds a nurturing environment. Within this environment, it will facilitate mindfulness exercises that promote self-reflection, effective stress management, and the cultivation of safe decision-making skills.  
 
The English as a New Language (ENL) section of our program is designed to meet the New York State Education Department's mandated services. It emphasizes the development of English language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Additionally, the program includes engaging topics like an introduction to high school in the U.S., understanding school access, requirements, and expectations, enhancing communication skills, learning about American culture, citizenship, community service, setting personal goals, fostering an inclusive community, advocating against hate, supporting LGBT+ rights, and addressing issues like racism and sexism.
 
The Health section of the program tackles vital issues that students face, including smoking, vaping, alcohol, drug abuse, adolescent growth and changes, AIDS education, family dynamics, child abuse, personal safety, nutrition, social media awareness, mental health, and community health services. These subjects are thoroughly explored to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to be proactive health advocates for themselves and our community.
This class is a 2 x 6 course.
