GENERAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Term: Full Year (2 semesters)
The traditional 9th and 10th program focus will be team sports while 11th-12th grade focuses on lifetime sport. Listed below are all the activities that can be offered. Course offerings will be decided when schedules are finalized.
Grades 9-10        
Fall: Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Basketball
Spring: Fitness and Strength Training, Floor Hockey, Ultimate Frisbee, Softball
Grades 11-12      
Fall: Project Adventure, Cooperative Games, Badminton, Ultimate Frisbee, Archery, Fencing, Volleyball
Spring: Fitness, Strength Training, Basketball, Tennis, Golf, Pickle Ball for the indoor sessions
 
ELECTIVE COURSES OFFERED:
OUTDOOR EDUCATION STRAND
Term: Full Year
Grades: 10-12
This strand will attempt to offer activities geared toward the outdoors.  Field trips will be planned to invite students to fully participate in an activity.  Suggested units of instruction will be boat skill, fishing, canoe/kayaking, biking, hiking, camping, orienteering, sailing and Project Adventure.  There will be one field trip per quarter associated with the units.  Please note some changes may be made due to weather and site availability.
Fall: Project adventure - low and high elements Orienteering, Hiking, Fishing, Canoeing
Spring: Project Adventure - low and high elements, Mountain Biking (both on and off campus activities), Camping, Backpacking Survival Skills and Sailing
 
ADVANCED PHYSICAL EDUCATION SKILLS
Term: Full Year
Grades: 11-12 Physical education teacher recommendation needed (Advanced Skills Physical Education replaces Sports Education.
Students will be required to sign-up in physical education classes in January.  An approved list will be forwarded to counselors in February.  Students in the course must be able to attain proficiency in at least four sport areas.  Skill instruction is advanced with performance drills requiring an above average level of fitness and ability to attain advanced level of game play.  
During the 1st and 4th quarters, students will be involved in traditional sports and their role as a more advanced player.  During the 2nd and 3rd quarter, students will have an opportunity to participate in non-player roles including coaching, officiating, and tournament planning. Students will work with physical education teachers within the regular class in these roles.  In this regard, the course will continue the sports education model and prepare students for the roles they will assume as parents and members of families, neighborhoods and communities.
Actual sport activities will vary depending on the availability of the facility and rotation of different sports. Students must be self-directed, mature and must have demonstrated success in the regular physical education class.

ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Term: Full Year
Grades: 9-12
This program is provided for students with special needs in physical education which can best be met through more individualized instruction.  Individual student assessment is used to determine skill and fitness levels in order to develop appropriate activities and instruction.   The program consists of development activities, games, sports, rhythms, fitness development, and activities suited to the interests and needs of the students.  Enrollment in this course is provided by the Committee on Special Education, and/or recommendation by professional high school staff.  These units can be included fitness, Project Adventure, floor hockey, basketball, soccer, tennis, softball, kickboxing and yoga.
 
DANCE AND MOVEMENT
Term: Full Year
Grades: 9-12
          This course is designed to enhance both the physical and aesthetic development of students using a variety of dance forms.  Basic concepts will be introduced focusing on: movement sequencing, flexibility, rhythmic patterns, strength and endurance.  Elements of dance composition will be explored using group choreography projects throughout the year.
Suggested units: Jazz, Modern Dance, Ballet, Choreography/ Composition.
Supplementary Units: Theater Dance, Multi-Cultural Dance, Improvisation, conditioning for dance.
 
ADVANCED DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY
Term: Full Year
Grades 10-12 Fundamental dance experience required.
This course has been developed for students who have mastered the fundamentals of dance and are interested in a challenging dance class with the opportunity to create original choreography.  The course curriculum will focus on: Jazz Dance, Ballet, Modern Dance and Dance Composition/Choreography.  Creative projects and skill performance assessment will be ongoing throughout the course.  Field trips and performance opportunities will be available to students enrolled in the course.
 
ADVANCED STRENGTH TRAINING AND CONDITIONING
Term: Full Year
Grades: 10-12
Students will have an opportunity to master skills, activities and strategies to improve physical performance. There will be the use of Cybex machines, free weights, Plyometric boxes and drills, and testing equipment. We will learn to use physical assessment tests and then to design individualized programs to enhance physical performance. It can be directed at one’s daily life as well as Sport Participation. Portfolios will be kept and students will be given written assessments as well to determine mastery the subject matter.  This course is designed for the student who wishes to take their fitness to a higher level with intense workouts and information.
 
ADVANCED FITNESS & WELLNESS
Term: Full Year
Grades 11-12
This course offers students the opportunity to learn and engage in advanced fitness techniques.  In addition to some activities learned in 9/10 Fitness, students will engage in more advanced activities such as: power walking, running, interval step, body bars, ropes, tubes, yoga, kickboxing, advanced circuit training, etc. Activity content and fitness strategies will be learned that enable students to achieve advanced fitness levels leading to greater wellness and fit lifestyles.
 
FITNESS & WELLNESS
Term: Full Year
Grades: 9-10
This course offers students in grades 9 and 10 the opportunity to engage in a variety of fitness activities.  Students will participate in such activities as walking, step aerobics, weight training, Pilates, stability ball, kickboxing, and rollerblading.  These activities are designed to increase the student’s personal fitness level in the areas of cardiovascular endurance, strength flexibility, and agility. This course provides students with the foundation for life-long personal fitness.
