Chemistry is a laboratory-oriented course.  For the safety of all students taking thiscourse, the following regulations must be adhered to:

General State of the Laboratory:

  • Report any dangerous condition immediately.
  • In case of any accident notify the teacher atonce.

PersonalProtection:

  • Wear safety goggles when heating substances, handling acids, alkalis, volatile fluids and other strong chemicals, or whenhammering, cutting or grinding solids.
  • Tie back long hair when there are open flames.
  • Wear a rubber apron when reagents are in use.
  • Wear shoes at all times.

Precautions whenHandling Equipment:

  • Do not touch glass or metal that has beenrecently heated.

  • For experiments designated as dangerous, do notrun the experiment until the teacher has checked the setup first.
  • Use laboratory equipment for the purpose forwhich it has been designed.
  • Equipment is expensive and must be handled withcare.
  • Do all student laboratory work under the directsupervision of a teacher.
  • Never throw anything in a laboratory or engagein horseplay.
  • Do not mix chemicals together unless you aredirected to do so in an experiment.
  • Do not perform unauthorized experiments.

Orderliness:

RULES REGARDING:

LABORATORY EXPERIENCE

Admission of the student into a Regents examination in aScience is certification that the laboratory work is complete.  Completion implies a satisfactory report ofthe laboratory work; without such a report, much of the value of the laboratorywork is lost.  A deficiency here meansthat the course in not completed and the student concerned should not beadmitted to the Regents Examination.

Please note that in order to get credit for this Regentscourse, you must write a satisfactory laboratory report for each experimentperformed.  If this is not done you willnot be able to take the Regents and on your transcript you will receive a  “0” for the Regents grade.  This will be averaged in to determine yourfinal grade for the course.

N.Y.S. Education Law requires a laboratory notebook orfolder.  This notebook or folder shouldcontain all your laboratory reports.  InChemistry, student lab reports will be kept in folders by the teacherthroughout the year.
