Who: Students of any grade level who have satisfied their Foundations in Studio Art requirement, or any student who has taken a Music theory class for their creative art requirement.         
 
What:  This course provides an introduction to the practices and materials associated with drawing and painting and prepares students to work in a variety of  media, including charcoal, pastels, acrylic paint, and oil paint. The curriculum emphasizes drawing and painting from observation and the development of thematic drawing and painting. Students further develop skills established in Foundations in Studio Art, including form, light, perspective, color theory, proportion and scale. Students will also study art history, aesthetics, and art criticism in order to become aware of how these practices are applied to their own artwork.
 
When: This is a one-semester course which should be taken before Drawing and Painting II. 
 
Where: Art studio, field trips, and location drawing.
 
 
 Why: Students who successfully complete this course will be well prepared for one of the college-level Advanced Placement courses offered to Junior and Seniors.
